How to prep a room for paint.
- Plan & Gather Supplies
Decide on colors, primer needs, and order (ceiling first if painting it, then trim, then walls). Collect drop cloths, painter’s tape, plastic sheeting, spackle/putty knife, sandpaper (120–220 grit), vacuum, primer (if needed), ladder, etc. - Clear & Protect the Space
Remove furniture (or push to center and cover fully with plastic/drop cloths). Take down wall art, mirrors, shelves, curtains/rods, outlet/switch covers (bag hardware). Cover floors completely with drop cloths/plastic (tape edges). - Remove/Protect Fixtures & Trim
Tape off baseboards, trim, windows, doors, and edges with painter’s tape (press firmly for clean lines). Cover or remove doorknobs/hinges if possible. - Repair & Smooth Surfaces
Inspect walls/ceiling under good light. Scrape loose/peeling paint. Fill holes, cracks, dents with spackle or lightweight filler (thin layers; multiple coats if needed). Caulk gaps along trim/corners if separated. Let dry fully. Sand patches and entire surface lightly to dull gloss and feather edges smooth. Vacuum/wipe away all dust. - Clean Thoroughly
Dust top-to-bottom (cobwebs, corners, baseboards). - Prime (If Necessary)
Apply primer for dramatic color changes, stains, glossy surfaces, new drywall, or switching paint types. Use stain-blocking/bonding primer as needed. Let dry fully (1–4+ hours). Lightly sand if rough, then dust.
Once prepped, you’re set to paint: cut in edges first, then roll in sections for even coverage. Good prep prevents peeling, bubbling, or uneven results—spend the time here for pro-level outcomes!
